"Even without knowing about regional boat design traditions of the early 1900s, anyone admiring Spirit at her home port in Seattle would probably bet she was built for a place in the sun. Her one-cabin design, with a large, open steering station and spacious aft cockpit is in clear contrast to the boats built for the cool, wet climate of the Pacific Northwest. And indeed, Spirit, built in 1931, came out of the Merrick Boatyard in sunny Long Beach, California."
